DDG, born Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr. in Pontiac, Michigan, first rose to fame as a YouTube personality before establishing himself as a rapper. His main channel mixed vlogs, reaction videos and diss tracks, and that online-native path gave him a large built-in audience when he began releasing original music on SoundCloud.

He released his debut EP, Take Me Serious, in March 2018, followed a year later by the shorter Sorry 4 the Hold Up.
