Das Racist

Das Racist were a Brooklyn-based hip-hop trio formed by MCs Heems (Himanshu Suri) and Kool A.D. (Victor Vazquez), joined onstage by hypeman Dapwell (Ashok Kondabolu). The group first caught wide attention in 2008 with the viral single «Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell», a deceptively goofy track that hinted at the layered wordplay and cultural commentary that would define their sound. Their humor, dense with pop-culture references and internet-era irony, often obscured sharp observations about race, identity, and the absurdities of American life.

In 2010 the group released two acclaimed free mixtapes, Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man, which built a devoted following and cemented their reputation as one of the most original acts in alternative hip-hop. Songs such as «Rainbow in the Dark» and «Rapping 2 U» showcased their loose, conversational flows and willingness to blend absurdist comedy with genuine lyrical dexterity. Their only studio album, Relax, followed in 2011 to strong critical praise, further establishing their reputation as a group who could be both a punchline and a serious artistic statement at once.

Das Racist disbanded in 2012, but their influence persisted through their members' subsequent careers. Heems went on to release solo material and formed the duo Swet Shop Boys with Riz Ahmed, while Kool A.D. pursued various solo and collaborative projects. Despite their short run, Das Racist remain a touchstone for hip-hop that treats humor as a serious artistic tool.
