Cutty Ranks

Cutty Ranks, born Philip Thomas in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, is a dancehall deejay known for his commanding, gruff-voiced delivery and his role in shaping the harder, more aggressive style that came to dominate Jamaican sound-system culture from the late 1980s onward. He came up through the island’s sound-system circuit, working with several prominent sounds including Killamanjaro, where he performed alongside other rising deejays of the era, before establishing himself as a recording artist in his own right.

His breakthrough single «The Stopper», released in the early 1990s, became a dancehall anthem and remains his most enduring signature track, showcasing the forceful, chanting delivery that influenced a generation of deejays. He also found crossover success in the UK with «Limb by Limb», a track that helped introduce his rugged style to audiences beyond Jamaica’s core dancehall scene.

Working across labels and producers throughout the 1990s, Cutty Ranks built a catalogue defined by combative, high-energy lyrics delivered over hard-hitting riddims, cementing his reputation as one of the era’s foremost «rough» or «gun-talk» style deejays. His influence can be heard in the more aggressive strands of dancehall that followed, and his records remain touchstones for the genre’s early-90s golden period.
