About the artist
Consequence, born Dexter Mills, is a New York hip-hop artist and cousin of Q-Tip who first came up rapping alongside members of A Tribe Called Quest before establishing himself as a solo MC. His voice and cadence carry the boom-bap, jazz-inflected lineage of the Native Tongues collective, even as his own career pushed into more mainstream, radio-oriented territory.
He rose to wider prominence as one of the original artists on Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music imprint after being signed in 2004, releasing his debut album «Don't Quit Your Day Job» in 2007. During his years with West he co-wrote on multiple high-profile records, contributing behind the scenes as well as performing on collaborative tracks, before parting ways with the label in 2011.
His best-known commercial moments include «Grammy Family» alongside DJ Khaled and «Whatever U Want» featuring John Legend and Kanye West, both of which showcased his sharp, punchline-driven wordplay over soulful, sample-heavy production. Consequence's catalog blends witty, conversational storytelling with the polish of a rapper who came up inside one of hip-hop's most influential creative circles.
