Coast Contra

Coast Contra is a Los Angeles hip hop collective formed around the 505 Apartments in the city, which gave the group one of its earliest signature freestyles. The lineup brings together Ras and Taj Austin, twin sons of West Coast veteran Ras Kass and singer Teedra Moses, along with Colombian-born Rio Loz and Philadelphia transplant Eric Jamal, giving the group a blend of West Coast and East Coast sensibilities within one crew.

The group built its early following on a stream of freestyles recorded over classic hip hop instrumentals, reinterpreting beats associated with artists like Nas and Mobb Deep while showcasing rapid trade-off verses between all four members. Their breakout moment came with a freestyle over JID's «NEVER», which became one of their most streamed releases and introduced them to a wider rap audience beyond Los Angeles.

Coast Contra's official debut single, «Queen & Slim», featuring BJ the Chicago Kid, appeared on the soundtrack to the 2019 film of the same name via Motown Records, followed by «Legacy» in 2020. The group's debut studio album, Apt. 505, released in 2022, is named after the apartment building where the members first came together, tying their origin story directly to their recorded work.
