Chip

Jahmaal Noel Fyffe (born November 26, 1990), known professionally as Chipmunk and later simply Chip, is a British MC from Tottenham, London, born to Jamaican parents. He emerged from the UK grime scene as a teenager, self-producing CDs by age thirteen before breaking through in the mid-2000s. His 2009 debut album I Am Chipmunk yielded the UK number-one single «Oopsy Daisy» and established him as one of grime's most commercially successful young artists.

His 2011 follow-up Transition pushed further into pop territory, featuring collaborations with Keri Hilson and Trey Songz, and the Chris Brown duet «Champion», which reached number two on the UK charts. Around 2012, he consciously stepped back from mainstream pop ambitions, signed to T.I.'s Grand Hustle Records, dropped the «-munk» from his name, and returned to grittier grime and hip-hop with the mixtape London Boy. His collaboration with Wiley, «Reload», later returned him to the UK top ten.

Chip's career reflects grime's broader arc — from underground pirate-radio roots to pop crossover and back to scene-rooted authenticity — and his releases like the Believe & Achieve EPs and his freestyle-driven diss tracks have kept him a fixture in UK rap discourse. He is respected both for early pop hits and for later reasserting his credibility within grime.
