About the artist

Charlie Daniels was an American country and Southern rock musician, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from North Carolina, best known as the founder and namesake of the Charlie Daniels Band. Active from the 1970s onward, he became one of the defining figures of Southern rock and country-rock crossover, blending fiddle-driven country, blues, gospel and rock into a distinctive, high-energy sound.

Daniels achieved his greatest fame with the 1979 single «The Devil Went Down to Georgia», a fiddle showcase telling the story of a fiddle contest between a young Georgian and the Devil; the song won a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and remains one of the most iconic country-rock recordings of all time. Other well-known songs include «Uneasy Rider», «Long Haired Country Boy» and «The South’s Gonna’ Do It Again», reflecting his mix of storytelling humor, Southern pride and rebellious spirit.

Before his solo career took off, Daniels worked as a session musician, contributing to recordings by artists including Bob Dylan. Over a career spanning five decades, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, and remained a touring and recording artist until his death on July 6, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee.
