Chalino Sánchez

Chalino Sánchez, born Rosalino Sánchez Félix, was a Mexican singer-songwriter from Sinaloa who became one of the most influential figures in Regional Mexican music. Known primarily for his narcocorridos — ballads recounting the exploits of drug traffickers and outlaw figures — he is widely regarded as a foundational pioneer of the narcocorrido genre and is posthumously honored as its king.

Chalino’s raw, unpolished vocal style and his practice of writing corridos on commission for real people, often recounting true and sometimes dangerous stories, set him apart from the more polished norteño and banda acts of his era. His music resonated deeply with working-class and immigrant communities on both sides of the US-Mexico border, and his DIY approach to recording and distributing music helped build an enormous grassroots following in Sinaloa and in Mexican communities across California and the American Southwest.

Sánchez’s life was cut short when he was murdered in 1992 under circumstances that have become part of his legend, only intensifying his cult status. His influence is heard throughout the subsequent generation of narcocorrido and Regional Mexican artists, many of whom cite him directly as their inspiration.
