Cassper Nyovest

Cassper Nyovest, born Refiloe Maele Phoolo, is a South African rapper, singer and record producer widely regarded as one of the defining figures of modern South African hip hop. Rising to national prominence in the early 2010s, he built his career around his independent label and media company, Family Tree, releasing a run of albums — Tsholofelo, Refiloe and Thuto — that blended hip hop with kwaito, house and pop sensibilities distinctly rooted in South African culture.

Cassper Nyovest is known as much for his ambition and showmanship as for his music, staging large-scale, self-funded concerts that became milestones for South African hip hop's ability to fill major arenas without international backing. His singles, including «Doc Shebeleza» and songs like «Baby Girl» and «Destiny», helped popularize a homegrown, unapologetically South African brand of hip hop that resonated across the continent.
