Captain Murphy

Captain Murphy is an alter ego and rap alias of Steven Ellison, the producer and musician better known as Flying Lotus. The persona emerged in 2012 with the mixtape «Duality», released anonymously and accompanied by cryptic cartoon visuals that fueled months of speculation about the rapper's true identity, with names like Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and Zeroh all floated as possibilities before Ellison revealed himself as the man behind the mask.

Musically, Captain Murphy trades the jazzy, abstract instrumentals Flying Lotus is known for as a producer for a darker, more menacing rap sensibility, filled with occult imagery, druggy stream-of-consciousness verses and horror-movie atmosphere. Tracks such as «Between Villains», «Disciples» and «The Killing Joke» showcase a loose, off-kilter flow over woozy, bass-heavy beats, often produced by Flying Lotus himself alongside collaborators tied to his Brainfeeder label.

The project connected Flying Lotus to the Los Angeles beat scene and underground hip-hop circles, drawing guest appearances and cosigns from artists like Earl Sweatshirt and members of Odd Future. While Captain Murphy has remained a largely dormant side project since «Duality», it stands as a distinctive detour in Ellison's catalog, illustrating his range beyond instrumental and jazz-fusion production.
