Cannibal Ox

Cannibal Ox is a hip hop duo from Harlem, New York, consisting of rappers Vast Aire and Vordul Mega, often accompanied by DJ Cip-One. The group is part of the Atoms Family collective of underground New York MCs and rose to prominence through their 2001 debut album «The Cold Vein», produced almost entirely by El-P, then a key figure of the Definitive Jux label. The album became a landmark of underground hip hop, praised for its dense, apocalyptic production and vivid, often surreal lyricism describing life in Harlem through science-fiction imagery.

Vast Aire and Vordul Mega trade verses with distinct styles — Vast Aire's dense, wordplay-heavy delivery contrasting with Vordul Mega's more abstract, introspective flow — over El-P's cold, industrial soundscapes, creating an atmosphere that critics often described as dystopian or cinematic. «The Cold Vein» is frequently cited among the most influential independent hip hop albums of the early 2000s and helped cement Definitive Jux's reputation as a home for experimental, lyrically dense rap.

After «The Cold Vein», the duo largely pursued solo projects for many years before eventually reuniting for later releases, continuing to be regarded as a touchstone act within underground and abstract hip hop circles for their distinctive blend of gritty New York realism and otherworldly imagery.
