Camp Lo

Camp Lo is a hip hop duo from the Bronx, New York, formed in 1995 by rappers Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede. The pair broke through in 1997 with their debut album «Uptown Saturday Night», anchored by the breakout single «Luchini AKA This Is It», which became a defining record of the era's jazz- and blaxploitation-influenced rap sound. Produced largely by Ski Beatz, the album paired soulful, sample-heavy production with the duo's rapid-fire, slang-dense wordplay and vintage 1970s aesthetic, evoking pimp-culture cool and old-school New York flair.

Camp Lo's style stood apart from the mid-90s hardcore and mafioso rap dominating New York at the time, favoring a smoother, more playful and cinematic approach built on interlocking vocal chemistry between Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede. Tracks like «Coolie High», «Black Connection», and «Swing» extended the group's blend of nostalgic soul samples and dense, rhythmic rhyme schemes, while «Krystal Karrington» showcased their knack for character-driven storytelling.

Though «Uptown Saturday Night» remains their best-known work, Camp Lo continued releasing music into the 2000s and beyond, maintaining a cult following built on their distinctive verbal style. Their influence is often cited in discussions of underground and alternative East Coast hip hop, and «Luchini» in particular has endured as a genre touchstone, frequently referenced and sampled by later artists.
