Cali Swag District

Cali Swag District was an American hip hop group from Inglewood, California, formed in the late 2000s and made up of Smoove Da General, Yung, M-Bone and JayAre. The group emerged from the West Coast’s club and dance-driven rap scene, where a catchy hook and an accompanying dance routine mattered as much as lyrical content, a formula that fit the YouTube era perfectly.

Their 2010 single «Teach Me How to Dougie» became a genuine cultural phenomenon, popularizing the Dougie dance nationwide, reaching the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually going double platinum. The song's laid-back, party-ready production and simple, danceable hook made it a fixture at parties, sporting events and on television, and it remains the group's defining legacy in hip hop history.

Cali Swag District never matched that single's commercial peak with later releases, and the group's story was marked by tragedy: members M-Bone and JayAre both later died. Despite a short run at the top, the group's influence on dance-rap and viral music culture in the early 2010s is still cited as a precursor to the social-media-driven dance-song trend that followed.
