Cage

Cage, born Christian Palko in 1973 in Middletown, New York, is one of underground hip-hop's most confrontational and literary voices. Emerging in the late 1990s through associations with the Definitive Jux and Eastern Conference camps, he built a reputation for lyrics that mined personal trauma, addiction and psychological unraveling with unflinching detail, setting him apart from the more abstract or battle-oriented rap of his peers.

Beyond his solo catalog, Cage is a key connector figure in New York's independent rap scene. He co-founded the collective The Weathermen, formed the duo Smut Peddlers alongside The High & Mighty, and partnered with fellow rapper Tame One as Leak Bros. His most personally significant collaboration was The Nighthawks, a project with Camu Tao, whose death in 2008 marked a turning point in Cage's career and public persona.

Musically, Cage moved between horror-tinged storytelling, industrial and rock-inflected production, and stripped-down boom-bap, reflecting an artist unwilling to stay inside one lane. Songs like «Agent Orange» and «Among the Sleep» show his willingness to confront mental illness and family dysfunction directly, cementing his status as an influential, if divisive, figure in alternative hip-hop.
