Brandi Carlile

Brandi Carlile (born June 1, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter whose music moves fluidly across Americana, folk-rock, country and pop. Raised near Seattle, Washington, she built her core sound around long-standing collaborators, twin brothers Phil and Tim Hanseroth, whom she met in the early 2000s; the trio has operated as an equal creative partnership ever since, sharing songwriting and publishing credit regardless of who penned a given song. Her breakthrough came with her 2007 sophomore album The Story, whose emotive title track became one of her signature songs.

Carlile is known for a raw, powerful voice, often deployed with dramatic dynamic shifts from hushed verses to full-throated choruses, and for direct, personal songwriting that draws on her life as an openly gay woman, wife and mother. Her 2018 album By the Way, I Forgive You marked a commercial and critical high point, earning multiple Grammy nominations and featuring songs such as «The Joke» and «Every Time I Hear That Song».

She has worked with a wide range of producers and collaborators, including Rick Rubin and T Bone Burnett, and co-founded the country supergroup The Highwomen alongside Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby. Carlile has also produced for other artists, including Tanya Tucker, and continues to be recognized as one of contemporary Americana’s most respected voices.
