About the artist
Brand Nubian is a hip-hop group from New Rochelle, New York, formed in the late 1980s around rappers Grand Puba, Lord Jamar, and Sadat X, with DJ Alamo and later DJ Sincere handling turntables. The group emerged from the golden-age New York rap scene and became known for dense, socially and politically conscious lyricism grounded in the teachings of the Five-Percent Nation (Nation of Gods and Earths), which several members follow.
Their 1990 debut album «One for All» is widely regarded as a classic of the era, praised for its jazz- and soul-inflected production and its blend of Afrocentric political messaging with sharp, playful wordplay. After Grand Puba departed for a solo career, Lord Jamar and Sadat X continued as Brand Nubian, releasing «In God We Trust» (1993) and further albums that maintained the group's reputation for combative, doctrine-infused verses over hard boom-bap beats.
Songs like «Slow Down» and «Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down» remain among their best-known singles, and the group is frequently cited as an influential link between the conscious and hardcore strands of early-90s East Coast rap.
