Black Star

Black Star is a hip-hop duo formed by Brooklyn MCs Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Talib Kweli, who emerged from New York's underground rap scene in the late 1990s. Their sole studio album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, released in 1998, became a landmark of conscious hip-hop, praised for its dense wordplay, jazz-inflected production, and socially engaged lyricism.

The duo arrived at a turbulent moment for hip-hop, following the deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, and offered an alternative to the era's commercial rap narratives. Aligned loosely with the Native Tongues collective alongside acts like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, Black Star helped push underground and alternative hip-hop toward greater mainstream visibility, tackling themes of Black identity, community, and social critique.

Tracks like «Respiration», «Thieves in the Night», and «Definition» remain touchstones of late-90s rap. While Black Star released only one album together for many years, both Bey and Kweli went on to substantial, celebrated solo careers, and their occasional reunions have been treated as major events by hip-hop audiences who view the duo as a defining voice of conscious rap's golden era.
