Black Hippy

Black Hippy is a hip-hop collective from South Central Los Angeles formed in 2009, uniting four of the West Coast's most acclaimed rappers: Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. All signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, the four artists built their reputations largely through solo work while remaining constant collaborators, trading verses on each other's mixtapes and albums often without formal feature credits.

The group's chemistry became legendary through freestyles and posse cuts like «Black Hippy Freestyle» and «Scenario Freestyle», showcasing a shared lyrical intensity and West Coast identity even as each member developed a distinct style — from Lamar's introspective storytelling to ScHoolboy Q's gritty street narratives, Jay Rock's hard-nosed realism, and Ab-Soul's cerebral, conscious bent.

Despite years of anticipation, Black Hippy never released a full group album, with members explaining that each artist's individual career needed to be secured first. Still, the crew's influence on 2010s West Coast rap is undeniable, helping establish TDE as one of hip-hop's defining labels and cementing Los Angeles as a hub of lyrical rap in the post-Dre era.
