Billy Boyo

Billy Boyo, born Billy Theophilus Rowe in Jamaica, was one of the standout child DJs of early-1980s dancehall, emerging while still a teenager in a scene that briefly embraced very young MCs as both novelty and genuine talent. His raw, high-pitched delivery and rapid-fire chatting style fit the raw, sound-system-driven dancehall of the period, produced largely by figures central to the genre’s golden age.

His breakthrough single «One Spliff a Day» became a hit in 1981 and remains his best-known song, a stripped-down dancehall chant that captured the loose, ganja-friendly humor typical of the style. He followed it with further chart success in 1982 via «Wicked She Wicked», produced by the influential Henry «Junjo» Lawes, one of the most important producers of the era’s dancehall sound. Other tracks in his catalogue, including «Zim Zim», «Jamaica Nice», and «Dread Skank», reinforced his identity as a fast-talking, playful voice on record.

Boyo’s career, while short, is remembered as part of the wave that normalized youthful DJs in dancehall before adult toasting fully dominated the genre. He died in 2000 after a battle with a brain tumor, leaving behind a body of work still referenced by dancehall historians.
