About the artist
Big Zulu, born Siyabonga Nene, is a South African rapper and songwriter who became one of the country's most respected voices in Zulu-language hip hop. He gained attention with «Donsa Nkabi» in 2016 before signing with Universal Music and releasing his debut album «Ushun Wenkabi» in 2018, followed by «Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe» in 2019. His work is known for dense, technically demanding rap delivered mostly in isiZulu, rooted in storytelling and social commentary rather than the more pop-leaning strains of South African hip hop.
His 2021 album «Ichwane Lenyoka» marked a commercial and critical peak, producing hit singles «Mali Eningi», «Inhlupheko» and «Umuzi eSandton», with «Mali Eningi» going on to be certified double platinum. Tracks like «150 Bars (Ke Hip Hop Dawg)» further cemented his reputation for lyrical density and technical skill, distinguishing him within a genre often built more around hooks than bars.
Big Zulu has also worked as part of the duo Inkabi Zezwe, releasing the album «Ukhamba» and its lead single «Umbayimbayi» in 2023, which topped charts in South Africa. Alongside his music career, he has appeared in South African television productions, and his catalog reflects a consistent commitment to using indigenous language and heritage as the core of his artistic identity.
