babangida, born Alexander Bakulin, is a cult figure of Russian underground rap from Kaliningrad who rose to prominence in the mid-2000s for cultivating an anti-show-business persona. During his peak years, roughly 2002–2005, he became known for shunning the traditional music industry entirely — he never performed live and never released official albums through label channels, instead putting out all his material as free internet releases.

Anonymity became a core part of his image: beyond his name, city, and birth date, little else about him has ever been reliably confirmed, which only deepened his mystique among fans of underground Russian hip-hop. Tracks like «тень (Shadow)», «бусидо (Bushido)» and «не америка (Not America)» reflect a raw, lo-fi aesthetic paired with introspective and often dark lyricism that stood apart from the more commercial rap scene of the time.

His internet-only album «Макаревич» (2012) and the collaborative release «Дайте мне» with РЖБ (2010) remain key touchstones of his catalog. Despite — or perhaps because of — his refusal to engage with mainstream promotion, babangida retains a devoted following that treasures his work as an authentic artifact of Russia's early internet-era rap underground.
