Arrested Development

Arrested Development is an American alternative hip-hop group formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 1990s by rapper Speech and DJ Headliner. The group set out to offer a positive, Afrocentric, socially conscious counterpoint to the gangsta rap that dominated hip-hop at the time, blending rap with soul, gospel, and folk influences and a loose, communal, spiritually-minded image that stood apart from the genre's mainstream aesthetics.

Their debut album, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of…, released in 1992, became an unexpected international success, producing hit singles such as «Tennessee», «People Everyday» and «Mr. Wendal». The record earned the group two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, and Rolling Stone named them Band of the Year. The album's title referred to the long period the group spent before securing a recording deal.

Following lineup changes, including the departures of Headliner and vocalist Dionne Farris, Speech continued to lead Arrested Development through subsequent releases and international touring, with the group remaining especially popular in Japan and parts of Europe. Their music continued to explore themes of African-American identity, spirituality, and social commentary, cementing their legacy as pioneers of conscious hip-hop.
