AREA21

AREA21 is an electronic music duo formed in February 2016 by Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix and American singer-songwriter Maejor. Conceived as a creative side project outside the pressures of Garrix's mainstream festival career, the duo allowed both artists to experiment more freely with sound and songwriting. Their debut single «Spaceships» arrived on March 30, 2016, followed two months later by «Girls» on May 20.

The project's early catalog developed somewhat unconventionally: «We Did It» first surfaced online in September 2016 before receiving an official mastered release under the AREA21 name in June 2017, while «Glad You Came» was previewed by Garrix during his headlining set at Ultra Music Festival before its formal release in December 2017. Garrix has described the duo as a liberating outlet, noting that the free time it afforded let him work in the studio purely for enjoyment rather than commercial expectation.

In 2021, AREA21 released «La La La», introducing a new conceptual direction built around a shared narrative in which Garrix and Maejor appear as alien characters, a storyline that has since shaped the project's visual identity. This creative pivot set the stage for their debut album, Greatest Hits Vol. 1, which compiled and expanded on the duo's catalog. Tracks like «Followers», «HELP» and «Happy» further round out a discography defined by playful, festival-ready electronic pop.
