Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson is a Hall of Fame basketball player, not primarily a musician, best known for an 11-year career with the Philadelphia 76ers (1996–2007) that included the 1997 Rookie of the Year award, 11 All-Star selections, and an NBA Finals appearance in 2001. His explosive scoring, crossover dribble, and rebellious, tattoo-and-cornrows image made him one of the most culturally significant athletes of his era, closely tied to the aesthetics and attitude of late-1990s hip-hop.

Iverson's connection to music runs through that same hip-hop culture: in the early 2000s he attempted a rap career under the moniker Jewelz, generating controversy over lyrical content before the project was shelved, and unreleased tracks later circulated among fans. His most enduring pop-culture music moment, however, remains his 2002 «practice» press conference, whose repeated rant has been sampled and referenced widely in hip-hop and media.

After retiring from basketball in 2013, Iverson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and his number 3 jersey was retired by the 76ers. His influence on basketball culture, streetwear, and hip-hop's relationship with sport remains widely cited.
