Akua Naru

Akua Naru is an American poet and rapper from New Haven, Connecticut, known for fusing spoken-word poetry with soulful, jazz- and boom-bap-inflected hip-hop production. She built her reputation through the New Haven and later European spoken-word and underground hip-hop scenes before relocating to Germany, where she found a receptive audience for her literary, socially conscious style. Signed to Jakarta Records, she released acclaimed studio albums that blend autobiographical storytelling with commentary on race, gender, and Black identity in America and the diaspora.

Her work is distinguished by dense, carefully crafted lyricism rooted in her background as a poet, often structured around extended metaphors and call-and-response cadences reminiscent of the Black oral tradition.
