Akhenaton

Akhenaton, born Philippe Fragione on September 17, 1968, in Marseille, France, is a French rapper, producer, and one of the founding members of the pioneering group IAM. Raised in Plan-de-Cuques near Marseille, his childhood was marked by proximity to organized crime and street violence, experiences that later shaped the gritty, socially conscious tone of his lyrics. Descended from Italian immigrants with roots in Tuscany, Lazio, Piedmont, and Campania, Akhenaton frequently draws on this heritage in his songwriting, referencing Italian culture, religious imagery, and family history.

As a central figure of IAM, Akhenaton helped establish Marseille as a major hub of French rap, distinct from the Paris-centered scene, blending ancient Egyptian mythology, martial-arts imagery, and hard-edged social commentary. His solo work extends this legacy, tackling themes of racism, injustice, and personal reflection, as heard in tracks like «11'30 contre les lois racistes» and «La fin de leur monde».
