Akala

Akala, born Kingslee James Daley, is an English rapper, poet, journalist and academic from Kentish Town, London. The younger brother of rapper and singer Ms. Dynamite, he emerged from the UK hip-hop and grime scene in the mid-2000s and became known for lyrically dense, politically charged rap that draws on history, literature and social commentary. He founded the Hip-Hop Shakespeare Company, exploring parallels between Shakespearean verse and rap lyricism, and has built a public profile as a speaker and writer on race, class and British history alongside his music.

Musically Akala favours intricate wordplay, live instrumentation and boom-bap-leaning production, distinguishing him from more chart-oriented UK rap. He gained wide exposure through multiple appearances on Charlie Sloth's «Fire in the Booth» freestyle series, which showcased his rapid-fire technical delivery to a broader audience. Tracks such as «Shakespeare», «Find No Enemy» and «Comedy Tragedy History» reflect his blend of storytelling, historical reference and social critique.

Beyond music, Akala is the author of the acclaimed book Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire, and has lectured widely, cementing his reputation as an artist whose work bridges hip-hop and academic discourse on British identity and history.
