Afroman

Afroman, born Joseph Foreman, is an American rapper and singer known for laid-back, comedic hip-hop steeped in funk and blues influences. He began recording independently in the late 1990s, self-releasing early albums before relocating from Los Angeles to Mississippi, where he wrote and recorded Because I Got High in 2000.

The title track became a viral phenomenon through Napster file-sharing and heavy airplay on Howard Stern’s radio show, eventually earning Afroman a major-label deal with Universal Records and a Grammy nomination. Its stoner-comedy narrative and singalong hook made it one of the most recognizable novelty hits of the early 2000s, and it remains the song most associated with his name alongside its sequel-style companion piece «Crazy Rap (Colt 45 & 2 Zig-Zags)».

Afroman has continued releasing music independently for decades, cultivating a large catalog of raunchy, humorous, and autobiographical tracks such as «Palmdale» and «Gurl From Kentucky». Known for his DIY work ethic, touring relentlessly and self-distributing much of his output, he has remained a cult favorite whose blend of storytelling, stoner humor, and old-school funk grooves has kept him relevant well beyond his one breakout hit.
