Aesop Rock

Aesop Rock, born Ian Matthias Bavitz, is an American rapper and producer who emerged from the New York City underground hip-hop scene in the late 1990s. He is widely regarded as one of the most technically dense and verbose lyricists in the genre, known for surreal, abstract imagery, dark humor, and an intricate, allusive writing style that rewards close listening.

He began independently, selling his debut album Music for Earthworms while still a student, before building a lasting relationship with the label Definitive Jux and later El-P. Albums such as Labor Days, None Shall Pass, and Skelethon established him as a defining voice of independent, non-commercial rap, pairing dense wordplay with murky, textured production — much of which he has produced himself. Skelethon and The Impossible Kid marked a turn toward more personal, introspective songwriting, exploring themes of isolation, mental health, and creative process.

Beyond his solo work, Aesop Rock has collaborated extensively within the underground rap community, including projects with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz as Hail Mary Mallon, and with singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson as The Uncluded. His dense, idiosyncratic style has made him a touchstone for lyric-focused hip-hop.
