Advanced Chemistry

Advanced Chemistry are a pioneering German hip-hop group formed in Heidelberg in 1987, widely credited as one of the founding acts of German-language rap. Rapping in German rather than English, at a time when most European hip-hop imitated American models, the group helped establish rap as a legitimate vehicle for German social commentary.

Their sound draws on classic boom-bap and old-school hip-hop production, paired with lyrics that directly addressed racism, identity and belonging in post-reunification Germany. Their best-known track, «Fremd im eigenen Land» («A Stranger in My Own Country»), released in 1992, is regarded as a landmark of German hip-hop for confronting xenophobia and the experiences of children of immigrants growing up in Germany.

With members including rappers Torch and Toni-L, Advanced Chemistry is frequently cited by later generations of German rappers as a foundational influence, and «Fremd im eigenen Land» remains one of the genre's most historically significant releases, alongside other early tracks like «Operation Art. 3» and «Stilkontrabluff».
