Adonis

Adonis (born Adonis Smith) is a pioneering house music producer, DJ, and vocalist from Chicago, Illinois, whose 1986 track «No Way Back» became one of the defining records of early acid house. Emerging from the city's South Side dance underground alongside contemporaries who played legendary venues like the Warehouse and the Music Box, Adonis was among the first producers to build tracks around the hypnotic squelch of the Roland TB-303, a sound that would come to define an entire subgenre.

His output was closely tied to Trax Records, one of the most important independent labels of the era, through which much of Chicago house reached DJs and dancers worldwide. Rather than polished pop production, Adonis favored raw, minimalist grooves built from stripped-back drum machine patterns and repetitive basslines, often layered with soulful, gospel-inflected vocal touches that gave his tracks emotional depth beneath their mechanical pulse.

Decades after «No Way Back» first circulated on Chicago dancefloors, Adonis remains a respected elder statesman of house music, still recognized for helping shape acid house's stark, futuristic sound and for his role in the broader story of Chicago's dance music explosion in the 1980s.
