Monty Python

Monty Python was a British comedy troupe formed in London in 1969, composed of John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Five of the members were English, one Welsh (Terry Jones), and one American (Terry Gilliam). The group became legendary through their sketch comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus, which aired on the BBC across four seasons from 1969 to 1974 and redefined the boundaries of absurdist, surreal humor in television.

Beyond the television series, Monty Python produced a series of influential films, including And Now for Something Completely Different (1971), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983), along with the concert film Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982). Songs and sketches like «Always Look on the Bright Side of Life», the «Lumberjack Song», and the «Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch» became cultural touchstones, blending music, satire, and absurdity in a way few comedy acts before them had attempted.

The troupe ceased regular collective activity in 1983, though its members continued collaborating on individual and group projects, with sporadic reunions in the following decades. Graham Chapman died in 1989 and Terry Jones passed away in 2020. Monty Python's influence on comedy, film, and popular culture remains vast, shaping generations of comedians and writers who followed.
