Frank Zappa (1940–1993) foi um compositor, guitarrista e líder de banda americano cuja vasta obra fundiu rock, jazz, doo-wop e influências da música clássica de vanguarda em um estilo singular e inclassificável. À frente dos Mothers of Invention desde meados dos anos 1960 e gravando posteriormente sob seu próprio nome, tornou-se conhecido por composições tecnicamente exigentes, sátira contundente e um humor irreverente presente em títulos de álbuns, letras e estruturas musicais.
Zappa era ferozmente independente e mantinha controle rígido sobre suas gravações, lançando um catálogo enorme por meio de seus próprios selos em vez de depender de grandes gravadoras. Álbuns como «Joe’s Garage» mostraram seu talento para discos conceituais satíricos, enquanto canções como «Valley Girl» — com a participação de sua filha Moon Unit — trouxeram atenção inesperada do grande público. Igualmente sério era seu interesse pela composição orquestral, colaborando com conjuntos e maestros de música clássica contemporânea na última fase de sua carreira.
Além da música, Zappa foi um crítico declarado da censura, tendo testemunhado perante o Senado dos EUA contra a iniciativa do PMRC de rotular discos com avisos de conteúdo.
