Chet Baker (1929–1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist, one of the defining voices of West Coast cool jazz. Born in Yale, Oklahoma and raised in California, he rose to prominence in the early 1950s as part of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, whose piano-less arrangements let his warm, understated trumpet lines interweave with Mulligan’s baritone saxophone. This lyrical, restrained approach became his signature and set him apart from the harder-edged bebop trumpeters of the era.
Baker’s solo career took off with albums such as Chet Baker Sings (1954), where his soft, almost fragile vocal delivery on standards like «My Funny Valentine» and «I Fall In Love Too Easily» revealed an intimacy rarely heard from a jazz horn player turned singer. His interpretations of the Great American Songbook, including «But Not For Me», «Almost Blue» and «It Could Happen to You», remain touchstones of vocal jazz.
His life was marked by prolonged struggles with heroin addiction, which repeatedly derailed his career and led to legal trouble and time abroad. Despite this, he experienced a significant creative resurgence in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s, recording extensively until his death in Amsterdam in 1988. Chet Baker is remembered as one of jazz’s most poignant and influential figures, his cool, melancholic sound continuing to shape trumpet and vocal jazz alike.
