CeCe Peniston

CeCe Peniston is an American R&B and dance-pop singer from Phoenix, Arizona, who became one of the defining voices of early-1990s house and freestyle-influenced pop. She got her start providing background vocals and demos before breaking through as a solo artist with her debut album, which produced her signature international hit «Finally», a song that topped dance charts and crossed into mainstream pop success. Her powerful, soulful voice set her apart from many of her house-music peers, giving her records a gospel-tinged warmth even over four-on-the-floor club production.

Beyond «Finally», her debut era yielded a run of hits including «Keep On Walkin'», «We Got a Love Thang», and the more introspective soul ballad «Inside That I Cried», which showed her range beyond dancefloor anthems and reached the upper tiers of the Billboard pop, dance, and R&B charts. She followed up with a second album that leaned further into R&B, led by the Soulshock & Karlin-produced «I'm In The Mood», along with «I'm Not Over You» and «Hit By Love».

A later album included the hit «Movin' On» and a well-received cover of «Somebody Else's Guy», originally by Jocelyn Brown, which found renewed success on both sides of the Atlantic. Peniston has continued to release independent dance singles over the years and has also done some acting work. Her career and personal life were later profiled on the documentary series Unsung, cementing her legacy as one of the key voices of the early-'90s dance-pop crossover era.
