Cage The Elephant

Cage The Elephant is an American rock band formed in 2006 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, led by singer Matt Shultz. Before achieving wider recognition, several members played together in the high-school band Perfect Confusion. The group broke through with its self-titled debut album, whose single «Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked» gained massive exposure after being used in the video game Borderlands, introducing the band to a global audience beyond traditional rock radio.

Over the following decade the band built a reputation for restless genre-hopping, moving from raw garage-punk energy toward more melodic, psychedelic and alternative textures on albums such as Thank You, Happy Birthday, Melophobia and Tell Me I’m Pretty. Songs like «Cigarette Daydreams», «Trouble» and «Come a Little Closer» showcase a softer, more introspective side, while «Telescope» and «Cold Cold Cold» lean into more layered, atmospheric arrangements. This willingness to shift sound from record to record has made them hard to pin to a single rock subgenre.

Cage The Elephant is equally known for its intense, unpredictable live shows, which helped cement its cult following even before mainstream chart success. With releases like Social Cues and singles such as «Ready to Let Go», the band has continued evolving while remaining a defining act of 2010s alternative rock.
