Willie Nelson (nacido el 29 de abril de 1933) es un cantautor y guitarrista estadounidense criado por sus abuelos en Abbott, Texas, durante la Gran Depresión. Tras unos primeros intentos con un estilo de crooner más suave y cercano al pop, a finales de los años sesenta viró decididamente hacia la música country, convirtiéndose, junto a Waylon Jennings, en uno de los arquitectos del movimiento outlaw country, que rechazaba la producción pulida de Nashville en favor de un sonido más crudo y personal.
Sus álbumes emblemáticos Shotgun Willie, Red Headed Stranger y Stardust redefinieron lo que podía ser un disco de country, mezclando gospel, jazz y estándares pop con su característico timbre de guitarra de cuerdas de nailon y su fraseo por detrás del tiempo. Canciones como «On the Road Again», «Always on My Mind» y «Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain» se convirtieron en éxitos definitorios del género, mientras que su autoría de «Crazy» (grabada por Patsy Cline) consolidó su reputación como uno de los grandes compositores del country.
