The Archies were a fictional band built around the characters of Archie Andrews and his friends from the Archie Comics universe, created to accompany the 1968 animated series The Archie Show. Their music was actually performed by session musicians assembled by producer Don Kirshner and songwriter Jeff Barry, with singer Ron Dante providing lead vocals and Toni Wine handling duet and backing parts, making The Archies one of the earliest and most successful examples of a virtual band.
The project became a defining act of the bubblegum pop sound that dominated the late 1960s and early 1970s, characterized by simple, catchy hooks, upbeat production and lyrics aimed squarely at a young audience. Their biggest hit, «Sugar, Sugar» (1969), topped charts internationally and became one of the best-selling singles of its era, cementing the bubblegum pop genre in the mainstream.
Beyond «Sugar, Sugar», The Archies released a run of singles and albums tied to their various animated series, including «Jingle Jangle» and «Who's Your Baby?». Their success as a studio-only, cartoon-fronted act helped pave the way for later virtual and animated musical acts, proving that a band without a physical touring presence could still achieve major chart success.
