Sobre el artista
Sonic Youth fue una influyente banda de rock experimental de Nueva York, formada en 1981 por Thurston Moore y Kim Gordon, a quienes más tarde se unió el guitarrista Lee Ranaldo y, finalmente, el baterista Steve Shelley. Surgida de las escenas no-wave y noise de la ciudad, la banda desarrolló un sonido característico basado en afinaciones de guitarra poco convencionales, texturas disonantes y una fusión de estructura vanguardista con oficio pop.
Su racha de álbumes de mediados y finales de los 80, que culminó con «Daydream Nation» en 1988, es considerada su punto creativo más alto y una de las declaraciones definitorias del rock underground estadounidense, mezclando extensas incursiones de ruido con una escritura melódica y urgente. Canciones como «Teen Age Riot» y «Schizophrenia» capturan ese equilibrio entre el caos y los ganchos melódicos.
En 1990 la banda firmó con Geffen, un movimiento que inquietó a parte de la comunidad indie pero abrió un nuevo capítulo de mayor reconocimiento. Álbumes como «Goo» y «Dirty» llevaron canciones como «Kool Thing» y «Tunic (Song for Karen)» a un público más amplio sin perder el filo experimental de la banda. Sonic Youth siguió siendo enormemente influyente en el rock alternativo e indie, admirada tanto por su audacia sonora como por su papel al conectar el art-rock underground con la visibilidad mainstream.
