Randy Newman is an American singer-songwriter, pianist and film composer, born in Los Angeles in 1943 into a family with deep Hollywood ties — several of his uncles were prominent film composers, and that orchestral, cinematic sensibility runs through his own songwriting. He built his reputation from the late 1960s onward as a wry, deeply literary songwriter, known for adopting unreliable narrators and biting satire to explore American hypocrisy, prejudice and self-delusion, most famously on songs like «Rednecks» and «Short People», which were frequently misread as sincere rather than satirical.
His singing voice — gravelly, world-weary, delivered over rolling piano and lush orchestration indebted to Tin Pan Alley and New Orleans R&B — is instantly recognizable, and albums like «Sail Away» and «Good Old Boys» are considered high points of 1970s American songwriting.
Alongside his solo career, Newman became one of the defining voices of modern film scoring, writing music for «The Natural», «Toy Story» and its sequels, «Monsters, Inc.», «A Bug's Life» and «Cars», among many others, and contributing the enduring standard «You've Got a Friend in Me». He has won multiple Academy Awards and Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
