Jimi Hendrix, born James Marshall Hendrix in Seattle, Washington, in 1942, remains one of the most influential guitarists in the history of popular music. After an early career backing R&B acts in the United States, he moved to London in 1966, where he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. The trio's blend of blues, rock and psychedelia, built around Hendrix's radical approach to distortion, feedback and the wah-wah pedal, redefined what the electric guitar could do.
His breakthrough performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 introduced him to American audiences, and albums such as «Are You Experienced», «Axis: Bold as Love» and «Electric Ladyland» cemented his reputation as a sonic innovator. His 1969 performance of the American national anthem at Woodstock became one of the defining images of the era, showing how far he had pushed the instrument's expressive range.
Hendrix died in London in 1970 at the age of 27, but his catalog, including live recordings and posthumous releases, continues to shape rock, funk and blues guitar playing. His fusion of raw blues feeling with studio experimentation left a mark on virtually every guitarist who followed, from Prince to Eddie Van Halen.
