Elvis Depressedly

Elvis Depressedly is a lo-fi indie rock project formed in 2011 in Columbia, South Carolina, centered on singer-songwriter Mathew Lee Cothran, previously known for his work as Coma Cinema, alongside multi-instrumentalist Delaney Mills. The band's sound is built on hazy, distorted guitars, murmured vocals buried in tape hiss, and lyrics that dwell on depression, faith, addiction, and small-town malaise, placing it within the bedroom-pop and lo-fi indie scenes that flourished on Bandcamp and cassette labels in the early 2010s.

Songs like «Weird Honey», «Pepsi/Coke Suicide», and «Angel Cum Clean» exemplify the project's blend of gentle melody and blunt, often darkly funny confession, recorded with a deliberately rough, homemade aesthetic. Cothran has described choosing the band's name almost as a joke while working a dishwashing job, a reflection of the wry, self-deprecating humor that runs alongside the bleaker themes in his songwriting.

Over the following years Elvis Depressedly became a touchstone act for a generation of lo-fi and emo-adjacent listeners, influencing younger artists in the same DIY, tape-hiss tradition. Cothran has continued to release music under multiple aliases, with Elvis Depressedly remaining the most widely known vehicle for his sparse, emotionally raw songwriting.
