Darkthrone

Darkthrone are a Norwegian metal band from Kolbotn, near Oslo, formed in 1986 and now consisting of Gylve «Fenriz» Nagell and Ted «Nocturno Culto» Skjellum. They began as a death metal act, releasing the album «Soulside Journey» in 1990, before shifting decisively toward black metal. Their early-1990s trilogy — «A Blaze in the Northern Sky», «Under a Funeral Moon» and «Transilvanian Hunger» — became foundational documents of the Norwegian black metal scene alongside Mayhem, Burzum and Immortal.

Darkthrone's sound is defined by raw, lo-fi production, tremolo-picked riffing, blast beats and a deliberately primitive, ritualistic atmosphere rather than technical polish. Fenriz has often said the band values feeling and rawness over refinement, a philosophy that shaped how an entire generation of black metal bands approached recording.

Over the following decades the band moved fluidly between black metal, crust punk, and old-school heavy metal, refusing to tour or perform live and instead concentrating purely on studio output. Albums like «Panzerfaust» and «Sardonic Wrath» cemented their reputation, while later records embraced a rawer, more traditional metal sound, reflecting the duo's wide-ranging taste in the genre's history.
