Chromatics

Chromatics were an American band from Portland, Oregon, closely associated with the Italians Do It Better label and the atmospheric, retro-futuristic strand of synth-pop and electronic music that flourished in the late 2000s and 2010s. Centered around producer and multi-instrumentalist Johnny Jewel alongside vocalist and guitarist Ruth Radelet, the group evolved considerably from its earlier, more punk-rock incarnation into a moody synth-driven outfit.

The band's mature sound is defined by cool, reverb-drenched synthesizers, minimal drum-machine rhythms, and Radelet's breathy, detached vocal delivery, creating a nocturnal, cinematic atmosphere. Tracks such as «Kill for Love» and «Cherry» exemplify this dreamlike, neon-lit aesthetic, while their haunting cover of Kate Bush's «Running Up That Hill» became one of their most widely recognized recordings, later gaining further exposure through film and television placements.

Chromatics' music has been closely tied to soundtrack work, most notably contributions to David Lynch's «Twin Peaks: The Return», cementing their reputation for music suited to moody, atmospheric visual storytelling. Songs like «Into the Black» and «Shadow» further illustrate their signature blend of melancholic pop songwriting and icy electronic production, influencing a generation of synthwave and dream-pop acts.
