Carpenters

The Carpenters were an American duo formed by siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter, known for a soft, meticulously arranged pop-rock sound that drew on close vocal harmonies, lush orchestration and Karen’s distinctive contralto voice. Emerging in the late 1960s from Downey, California, they became one of the best-selling acts of the 1970s.

Their catalog includes enduring hits such as «(They Long to Be) Close to You», «We’ve Only Just Begun», «Top of the World» and «Yesterday Once More», songs that defined the soft-pop and adult contemporary sound of the era and remain widely covered and referenced today.

The duo’s career was cut short by Karen’s death in 1983 from complications related to anorexia nervosa, a loss that brought significant public attention to eating disorders. Their body of work continues to be regarded as a touchstone of melodic, harmony-driven pop craftsmanship.
