Blu, cuyo nombre real es Johnson Barnes III, es un rapero y productor estadounidense de Los Ángeles, California, considerado uno de los letristas más respetados del hip-hop underground de los años 2000 y 2010. Se dio a conocer ampliamente gracias al dúo Blu & Exile, cuyo álbum debut Below the Heavens (2007) es visto como un clásico moderno por su producción soulera y sus versos densos e introspectivos.
Más allá de su trabajo con Exile, Blu construyó una extensa discografía de álbumes colaborativos con productores como Mainframe, Ta Raach, Bombay, Damu the Fudgemunk, Madlib, Nottz y Union. Este enfoque basado en proyectos le permitió reinventar constantemente su sonido sin perder su característico juego de palabras y sensibilidad soul. Es una figura clave del colectivo angelino Dirty Science y codirige el sello New World Color, a través del cual ha publicado gran parte de su obra más reciente.
Su discografía aborda temas de amor, espiritualidad, lucha y autoexamen, entregados en un estilo fluido con influencias de jazz que ha marcado a toda una generación de raperos independientes.
