José Martí

José Martí was a Cuban poet, essayist, journalist, and revolutionary political thinker, celebrated as the intellectual architect of Cuban independence and one of the most influential figures in Spanish American literature. Born in Havana, he spent much of his life in exile — in Spain, Guatemala, Venezuela, and especially New York — writing prolifically as a journalist and organizing politically for Cuban independence from Spain, a cause for which he died in combat in 1895.

As a poet, Martí is regarded as a precursor of Spanish American Modernismo, prized for the simplicity, musicality, and emotional directness of his verse, most famously in the collection Versos Sencillos, from which lines like «Yo soy un hombre sincero» became widely known (and later formed the basis of the song «Guantanamera»). His poem «La niña de Guatemala» remains one of the most beloved pieces of Cuban poetry. Beyond poetry, his essay «Nuestra América» is a foundational text of Latin American political thought, arguing for regional identity and self-determination against foreign imperialism.

Martí's combination of literary innovation and political martyrdom made him a defining national symbol for Cuba and an enduring reference point across Latin America, admired equally as a writer and as a revolutionary hero.
