About the artist

Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) was an American essayist, poet, and philosopher, best known as a leading figure of the Transcendentalist movement alongside his mentor and friend Ralph Waldo Emerson. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, he spent most of his life closely observing the natural world around him, most famously during his two-year experiment in simple living at Walden Pond, which he recorded in his masterwork «Walden; or, Life in the Woods». That book, blending memoir, natural history, and social criticism, remains one of the foundational texts of American nature writing.

Thoreau is equally renowned for his political philosophy, articulated in the essay «Civil Disobedience» (originally «Resistance to Civil Government»), written after a night in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax in protest of slavery and the Mexican-American War. In it he argued that individuals have a moral duty to resist unjust laws through nonviolent means, a doctrine that profoundly shaped later movements for social change.

His ideas on self-reliance, simplicity, and principled resistance to unjust authority went on to influence Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., among many others, cementing his legacy far beyond literature into the realms of ethics and civil rights activism.
