Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American writer and poet who became one of the most influential figures in the history of literature, credited with helping shape the modern short story and lay the foundations of the detective and horror genres. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was orphaned young and raised by the Allan family of Richmond, Virginia, whose surname he adopted as his middle name, though his relationship with his foster father remained fraught throughout his life.

Poe's writing is marked by a preoccupation with death, madness, guilt, and the macabre, rendered in a dense, musical prose and verse style that continues to captivate readers. His poem «The Raven» made him a literary celebrity almost overnight, while «Annabel Lee» remains one of the most anthologized poems in the English language. His short fiction, including «The Tell-Tale Heart», «The Cask of Amontillado», and «The Fall of the House of Usher», established a template for psychological horror that later writers would follow for generations.

Despite his literary success, Poe's life was marked by chronic financial hardship, illness, and struggles with alcohol, and he moved between cities working as an editor and critic to support himself. He died in Baltimore in 1849 under circumstances that remain disputed to this day, leaving behind a body of work that permanently reshaped American and world literature.
