«Assassin's Creed Sea Shanties» is not a single performer but a collection of traditional sea shanties — work songs historically sung by sailors aboard merchant and naval ships — that were adapted and recorded for the soundtracks of the video games «Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag» and «Assassin's Creed: Rogue». These shanties, including well-known pieces such as «Bully in the Alley», «The Coasts of High Barbary», and «Roll and Go», were used in-game to accompany sailing sequences and to reinforce the pirate-era Caribbean setting of Black Flag.
Sea shanties traditionally follow a call-and-response structure, with a lead singer, or shantyman, delivering verses that set the rhythm for the crew's labor, while the rest of the sailors join in on the chorus. Much of what is known today about traditional shanty repertoire and performance style comes from the documentation work of Stan Hugill, frequently cited as the last working shantyman, whose collections preserved many of the songs later adapted for the games.
The Black Flag and Rogue soundtracks brought renewed popular attention to the shanty tradition, introducing the genre to a wide gaming audience and contributing to a broader revival of interest in sea shanties in subsequent years. The recordings on Lyricser reflect this soundtrack tradition of maritime work songs rather than the output of a conventional music act.
